CAVERNOUS, 2018
I made this piece Cavernous, in my senior thesis class at VCU in 2018. Cavernous meaning “giving the impression of vast, dark depths” but also the type of tumors that were found on my brain, Cavernous Hemangioma. Two of these tumors were found hemorrhaging in my cerebellum & had to be removed when I was only 6 years old. This piece reflects the trauma & PTSD I endured & am still facing 19 years later due to having brain surgery. The video is compiled of MRI scans of my brain, X-rays, distorted scans of the countless documents detailing the diagnosis & surgery, images of me after the surgery, cavernous hemangiomas under the microscope, & images of the hospital where I had the surgery, Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The audio is sounds that are heard during an MRI scan. Even though this is something very difficult for me to share, I am proud of myself & this piece. Thanks for looking!
